The Classics - Opening Lines: The Awakening by Kate Chopin

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/d/d6/Timeless_Books.jpg/320px-Timeless_Books.jpgA green and yellow parrot, which hung in a cage outside the door, kept repeating over and over:"Allez vous-en! Allez vous-en! Sapristi! That's all right!" (Published 1898)

I love the classics and plan to share some "opening lines" over the coming months. Comment if you like, or read for inspiration. Writing styles were different then, but were they really?

  1. I read The Awakening years ago. Such a powerful -- and sad -- story. And such good writing!

  4. Haven't read it. Yet another book that should be on my list. The forever long list.

  5. I think that parrot is telling the person to, " go away, for heaven's sake!" Glad to see this wasn't another one of those incredibly long run-on sentences with the overuse of the conjunction word "and" and with that, that was a good opening sentence!

    1. Overuse of 'that'' bothers me a lot too, not so much the use of 'and' unless obvious. Kind of thought there would be your friend's 'paw print' this time since this was about a parrot :)

"Stay" is a charming word in a friend's vocabulary
(A.B. Alcott). Stay and visit awhile. Your comments mean a lot to me.
