Day Trip to Joseph, Oregon

Vince and I took a day trip to Joseph, Oregon with friends on Sunday, a 30 minute flight from where we live (three hours by car). Vince built this RV8 in our garage over a twelve-year period and flew it for the first time in 2009. It was quite a project and I even learned how to rivet!! Someday (hopefully soon) it will be painted blue and white.

Joseph Airport is one mile from the town of Joseph.
We saw this old barn along the way.

Joseph is named after Chief Joseph, a famous Nez Perce Indian chief. (me on left)

Vince with friends Cathy and Mike (they have an
RV7 that Mike built!)

Wallowa County Museum. ~Sigh~ CLOSED

Vince and me (Joseph has beautiful bronze statues everywhere). Too bad most of the shops were closed. After walking around, we ate dinner at a restaurant in a nice outdoor setting and flew home.
Weather was great, but a little bumpy flying in!

Be sure to check out Cathy's blog for more pics! http://wordsworldandwings.blogspot.com/

  1. I cannot imagine the staying power of one who builds what will be a lovely treat over the course of twelve years! There must be a joy to seeing things grow slowly. Are you and your husband gardeners, by any chance? The plane is wonderful, and I have concluded that I really ought to slow down and savor the path. (Chief Joseph is one of my heroes!)

    1. Thanks! We both have a deep appreciation for all that was accomplished in this project. Vince read a statistic somewhere that only 25% of private builders ever finish! Funny you compare this with gardening, which I am most definitely, but Vince is by far NOT. He would laugh. I agree we need to slow down whenever we can. I hope you follow through! I studied Indian history and culture (the Nez Perce in particular) in college as an American Studies major. I keep thinking I should incorporate this into one of my stories!

  3. Sharon, what a great project to build a plane that flies. We had a friend who built one in his garage a few years ago, but it was a small ultralight. Your plane looks really big! I want to visit Oregon--never have. Love the beautiful sculptures you find out West--not many where I live in coastal area of Virginia...

  8. How interesting, thank you for sharing. I really like the bronze statues, and how unusual to have a little town called Joseph. I'm sorry those shops were closed, I would of liked to have caught a glimpse inside.

I shan't mention your hubby building a plane, its just too awesome for words!

  10. There will always be a special fondness for that plane, probably because Wolfie & I slept with the propellers. You just don't get intimate moments like that every day - nor friends like that.

"Stay" is a charming word in a friend's vocabulary
(A.B. Alcott). Stay and visit awhile. Your comments mean a lot to me.
