The Classics - CLOSING LINES: The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien

""Then the prophecies of the old songs have turned out to be true, after a fashion!" said Bilbo.

"Of course!" said Gandalf. "And why should not they prove true? Surely you don't disbelieve the
prophecies, because you had a hand in bringing them about yourself? You don't really suppose, do you, that all your adventures and escapes were managed by mere luck, just for your sole benefit? You are a very fine person, Mr. Baggins, and I am very fond of you; but you are only quite a little fellow in a wide world after all."

"Thank goodness! said Bilbo laughing, and handed him the tobacco-jar." (Published 1937)

I love the classics and plan to alternately share some "CLOSING lines" over the coming months. Comment if you wish, or read for inspiration. Writing styles were different then, or were they really?

  2. Great ending! I think I'm the only person out there who hasn't read The Hobbit. (Haha, whoops.)

    1. Oh, don't worry. I tried and lost interest, if you can imagine. Ha-ha!

  3. True story: I was in the play in high school. I played an elf. Yes, a play--it was a musical, believe it or not! We even had a dragon that breathed smoke. (Black ice.)

    1. Oh, what fun!! Can't say I ever did that, except to play Simon of the Chipmunks. Ha-ha. I lip-synced a song with 2 friends on stage in Jr. High. One of my favorite memories.

  4. One of my favorite books. I was given it as a present for my 13th birthday in 1964 and have reread it many times (along with "The Lord of the Rings"). Right now I'm rereading the Chronicles of Narnia. "The Hobbit" is really written in the style of a children's book. Some people may not like. Also some people may lose interest in books that have a great deal of "walking and talking" Tolkien's books are like that and so are "The Chronicles". The one Lewis novel that definitely isn't is the third in the "space trilogy". That is "That Hideous Strength" which starts slow but is a real conspiracy thriller and pretty violent in the end.

    1. Oh, yes the Narnia books. How wonderful they are. Only read the first one (to my kids) but did enjoy. Have read Lewis's other books. Ha-ha. All that 'walking and talking' got to me in the Hobbit.
Thanks for dropping by. Hope you're feeling better. Heard you were sick. Prayers!

"Stay" is a charming word in a friend's vocabulary
(A.B. Alcott). Stay and visit awhile. Your comments mean a lot to me.
