U is for Unknown: Inventions by Women A-Z

The unknown inventors are all the women out there past and present who have had great ideas, implemented them, and never filed a patent.

Whether it was to cobble parts together to
make something new and amazing......

Whether it was to map a new direction and way of thinking.....

Whether it was to make the magical a reality.....

This post is about the ingenuity of women everywhere,
who used/use their brains to solve a problem.

                         Interested in filing a patent?

According the United States Patent and Trademark Office, there are three types of patents:

1) Utility patents may be granted to anyone who invents or discovers any new and useful process, machine, article of manufacture, or composition of matter, or any new and useful improvement thereof;

2) Design patents may be granted to anyone who invents a new, original, and ornamental design for an article of manufacture;

3) Plant patents may be granted to anyone who invents or discovers and asexually reproduces any distinct and new variety of plant.

  1. There must be countless women out there who have gone unrecognised and no doubt several of them who had their invention stolen by male relatives or business partners too. Here's to all of them.

    1. Same here. I'm sure there is much more involved than the description I pasted here. The website is packed with information.

  3. I bet there are countless women inventors out there who aren't known. They should be though.

    Great post!

  5. When my father-in-law invented a direct-seeding drill (to plant our crops), he wanted to patent it, but learned from the patent attorney that although he'd come up with a new design, he hadn't created it from things that could be patented. So there must be more to patents than just coming up with a new idea.

    1. I'm sure there is. From what I saw, the website would take hours to understand, but at least it's there for those who qualify.

  8. Yes, there are a lot of them out there, like the one who discovered the use of foxgloves for the heart, only to have it taken by a man. And Rosalind Franklin, who discovered the double helix and her male competitors, who were working on a triple helix, read her notes and rushed into publication first and STILL get the credit for the discovery of DNA. And one of them, James Watson, sneered at her!

  12. Yes I'd invest in that magic pill that helps men be more truthful in acknowledging their counterparts' significant contribution.

    To all those unknown heroines, I raise my coffee (early morning still), and thank you Sharon. Your posts have been so interesting and valuable in highlighting these women.
